Chapter One : Velveta
Long wisps of dark hair cascaded the night’s sky as I trudged along tracing Velveta’s tracks. Watching the speed
and determination of my friend shocked me, but caused my senses to accelerate and sound of my footsteps to lower and
lower until just a miniscule sound erupted from my quickening feet. If Velveta could survive in this state, I could, too.
Long and somewhat distant-sounding wailing overflowed my ears, and the distorted faces around me lunged forward to
attack as I stealthily followed the dark haired girl beyond me. Trying not to pay attention to the disturbing scenery in my surroundings, I pranced over each insanity-touched bodies with ease. Velveta was shoving the mental people like she
normally would, but I could see the apologetic tears streaming down her face as she pushed each person who would grab
at her back to the ground, creating a repetitive beat of thumping.
The moon was blood-red and the stars were dying. Was this what they called the apocalypse? Most everyone
around me was going crazy from the drama, and it was rare to find anybody untouched by the ferocity or damage
caused from this age. The weather was humid and beads of sweat rolled lamely down my forehead as anxiety overcame
me. What if I went crazy myself, before reminding Velveta of my existence? Or what if she went mental before me? How
would I live without her? My forehead scrunched uncomfortably while I realized that my old friend had stopped in front of
what looked like it could have been an insanely large house, if the government hadn’t ordered to eliminate it.
Eliminating is one of the main causes of these wrongdoings. The government had made a last minute law to
eliminate every household and living form, not including plants, untamed animals, or anything else necessary for living.
This law only addressed to the families who could just buy their way to freedom, or those who try to escape, like myself.
My family was eliminated; my home, my pets and my belongings, everything… I’m pretty doubtful that my parents would
want me to avenge for their unfair deaths, but I didn’t have a care. I would take revenge onto the government in any
way I could, no matter what.
It took time to realize that I have been silently crying the entire time I had been drowning in terrible flashbacks,
when I saw Velveta turn to me and ask for my name. Ask for my name? Could she not recognize me? Oh, yeah, all of
her memories of me were stolen when she was being eliminated. The tears flowed even harder as she backed away
uncertainly. She probably thought I was one of the Touched, but I wouldn’t share a thing about our adjacent past; unless
I wanted her to think I was crazy, I would have to wait until the chance for her to regain her memories of me herself.
“I am certainly not one of the Touched, I swear it to you. All I ask is if I can join you in a form of peace,” I said.
It sounded all weird and adult-sounding, but it was better than explaining that I was the one who saved your life before
your brain was fully wiped, but was too late for you to have all of your memories intact, so out of ALL things that could
have been taken out of that nutty brain of yours was that I was your best-friend for the past 16 years, ever since we
weren’t even able to walk (or newly boyfriend). I sighed; this was going to be more complicated than I thought it would. “Please.” I added.
“Why should I trust you?” she questioned. It appeared obvious that she had her doubts about me, so I just
replied I was good looking and she was too, and we would make a great match, of course, with an overconfident wink at
the end. “Don’t get so cocky.” She laughed; her sweet, melodious laugh.
Wiping the tears off my dirtied face, I forced a smile. I’ve missed that little snort in between her laughing, I
thought it was a very cute touch to her tall figure. Her auburn hair was long and soft, but it’s texture had roughened and
color grayed carefully. Velveta’s cool blue eyes looked tired, and dark circles overlaid. Her curvy figure had lessened to practically skin and bones. This girl needs major help to get her body fit again, though for some reason she seemed as
strong as ever.
